About the Company
Worio is an Internet search start-up established by former
students of the University of British Columbia [UBC] and members of
UBC's Laboratory for Computational Intelligence. UBC continues to
provide hosting for Worio's computers under the memorandum of
understanding between Worio and UBC's University Industry Liaison
Office (UILO) and UBC's Institute of Computing, Information and
Cognitive Systems (ICICS).

The Worio Team
Mike Klaas
Mike recently graduated with a M.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia. He brings machine learning and natural language processing experience to his role as technical lead.
Eric Brochu
Eric is a PhD candidate and Artificial Intelligence researcher at the University of British Columbia, currently on academic leave to work with Worio. His academic work involves the application of Machine Learning to text, images, video and other media, particularly in the domain of intelligent search.
Nando de Freitas
Nando is a professor in computer science, cognitive science and statistics at UBC. As a member of the Worio team, he aims to develop new ideas to facilitate communication and information discovery among all people.
Kevin Leyton-Brown
Dr. Kevin Leyton-Brown is an assistant professor in computer science at the University of British Columbia. He received a B.Sc. from McMaster University (1998), a M.Sc. from Stanford University (2001) and a PhD from Stanford University (2003). Much of his work is at the intersection of computer science and microeconomics, addressing computational problems in economic contexts and incentive issues in multi-agent systems. He previously served as a consultant to three different technology companies in Silicon Valley, and currently serves as scientific advisor to Vancouver-based Worio.com.
Ali Davar
Ali recently graduated with a LL.B. from the University of British Columbia. He has a background in both corporate and commercial law. Ali helps direct the business and product strategy and works with outside counsel to develop the project’s intellectual property portfolio.
Ben Frederickson
Ben has been working as a software developer for over 5 years. His last job was working as a Senior Software Developer at FileNet (now IBM) - writing backend systems for large scale document processing. Prior to that he worked as a Software Developer at Crystal Decisions (now Business Objects). He holds a bachelors degree in cognitive science from SFU - where he also studied engineering and computer science.
Dima Brodsky
Dima graduated in 2005 from the University of British Columbia with a Ph.D. in Computer Science. His interests include operating systems, file systems, and large scale distributed systems. After graduation he worked at Microsoft for their search engine "Live Search", on the News and Blogs team, developing the content aggregation and indexing pipeline.
